Whew this was tough. After observing the moon out my front door for a few nights I decided to photograph Luna with it, of course forgetting that both the time change and the rotation of the earth would put the moon on the other side of my house by the time I finished drawing, coloring, and cutting her out! I spent all last night waiting for the moon to get in position, but it never did. I had to move to the backyard tonight.

Luna is made from paper. Her mane is glitter cardstock and the moonlight around her mane is tissue paper. She is illuminated by candlelight and this is a minute long exposure.

Of course it's starting to get warm in Florida so after an hour outside Luna began to get wobbly and damp, spoiling the last few shots. I think this is the best one.

It's in high res, so click if you want a wallpaper.

Silly Foxxy, everybody knows that the night princess's one weakness is mild moisture!

Good thing she finished raising the moon before she got damp. And what a moon it was that night! So shiny, and almost perfectly round!

Huh, reminds me of Metropolis (original, not anime)

Interesting! I obviously love silent films & Lang is a big influence, so I can see a bit of Metropolis creeping in there, sure. :)

This is literally the opposite of "Paper Moon" I guess, and much better. It's hard to make out, but once I saw the little smile then it really all came together for me. I like the proud way she's carrying herself as she strolls around Canterlot. The whites around her glitter frame her very nicely, and the textures all look good even in black & white; the moon and silhouetted branches add a lot of charm and depth. (About 385,000 km of depth.) I love the stylized railing too and that it's in front of the light.

How many tries did it take to get the right exposure?

The exposure wasn't as much of an issue as the position of the moon! Once it was clear it was too far away to get the nice, full, bright sky I wanted, I really just took a bunch of different exposures and figured the rest out in the development program. Despite the cooperation of Luna herself, the moon proved to be the least cooperative element. :p

Nice effect! Too bad she didn't agree with the Florida weather.

Soggy Luna... don't worry, she got better. :)

That ethereal mane must be horrible in hot, humid weather. I bet it would look like an old, frayed sock that's been dropped in glitter and left out in the wind.
